Stand up for Samui on the 31st July

It’s amazing to see how the Samui community has worked and is still working to make this protest a success. Can you help?
Where to stand on the 31st?
The most important thing is to come out and be counted between 10am and noon on Saturday – so join in your neighbourhood or anywhere, and make new friends! However, if you have a car why not get your friends and neighbours together and get out to one of the more unpopulated areas of the island and help to make this incredible protest more effective?
In an update we received yesterday from one of the organisers Khun Nokie, she says it’s the area on the southwest of the island that needs the most attention – you will notice now on all the electric poles on the inland side of the island there are numbers – so head for the early 200’s:
She says: “Re July 31, we are worried about that we will have people in the western area as I informed you. Is it possible to have your friends to go to point no.208 (it’s in between Ford Garage and Coca cola Factory)? I will advise Karen to bring her friends and her staff to point 207 and Claudio to bring Rotarian to point 209.” Yoga Thailand will also be out there near the Na Muang area. So these are points suggested for anyone in the south western part and for anyone who can make the effort to drive there from elsewhere.
Becky will be leaving in a pickup from June’s Art Cafe in Nathon at 9am on Saturday and can offer you a ride down if you want to join her. Please call to confirm so she knows who is coming. +66805372589
If you have a car and want to meet there to help her with pickups, call her please.
What to wear?
If you don’t want to wear your swimsuit – see pic hopefully attached or link http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/multimedia/photos/Oil-protest-in-Brussels/ – then please wear a bright coloured t-shirt. There are nice t-shirts for sale for B100. You can find some at June’s cafe in Bophut or sms this number 0818921180 if you’d like to arrange to pick some up.

Gulf of Siam Drilling Update

Rak Aao Thai Network Group has been recently formed to oppose any and all government grants to petroleum companies for oil exploration and drilling concession in the Gulf of Siam adjoining Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao. Concerned network group are emerging in all major areas in the Siam Gulf area and to date the following official organizations, active communities and clubs supporting the network include:

Koh Samui Municipal Office                           Thai Hotel Association (Eastern South Part)

Tourism Association of Koh Samui               Suratthani Trade and Commerce Association

Spa Association of Koh Samui                        Green Island Foundation

Prawn Farm Club of Suratthani                      Tourism Association of Koh Phangan

Rak Phangan Club                                              Rak Koh Tao Club

Ratchapatch Suratthani University Marine Resources and Khanom Shores Preservation Club

Lipa Yai Preservation Group                          Lamai Preservation Group

Samui Local Fishery Group                            Samui Mermaid Group

The main objectives and responsibilities of the network group for the movement against the oil exploration and drilling are

  1. To direct the movement against the oil exploration and drilling that can cause negative impact to tourism industry in the territory of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao To conduct campaigns and create awareness among the public about the negative effect of oil exploration and drilling to entrepreneurs and communities alike
  2. To organize an initial mass demonstration on July 31, 2010. Minimum number of 35,000 of local residents and visitors will link hands forming a continuous human chain along Koh Samui’s ring road.  The purpose of the demonstration is to actively protest against the unacceptable policy and decision made by the Ministry of Energy
  3. To draft an official letter to the Prime Minister on  behalf of Rak Aao Thai Network Group and call for the withdrawal of the concession for oil exploration and drilling that can cause negative impact to tourism industry in the territory of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao
  4. To set up a middle term and long term plan in case the government refuses to take any action to accede to the demand of Rak Aao Thai Network Group.
  5. To openly and freely express that, as citizens of Thailand, we have the right to seek justice as stated in the Constitution of Thailand.

Since it is obvious that the oil exploration and drilling can have a negative impact on all our businesses and quality of life in both a direct and indirect way, we, Rak Aao Thai Netwrok Group need to move and take every possible action against  oil exploration  and drilling urgently.  We all agree that we have to object to the oil exploration immediately and with great vigour, because if oil drilling commences, we would have lost this opportunity to negotiate with the government and this will make the chances of victory very slim.

We would therefore urge you to  forward this information to your friends, colleagues, neighbours, employees and people you may know to participate in the event  “Link hands around  Koh Samui’s Ring Road” on July 31, 2010. For this event we will ask everyone to form a continuous human chain of hands around the road from 10.00 to 12.00 hrs. A minimum number of 30,000 local residents and tourists is required to support the success of the event.  As for the hotel industry, we would appreciate very much if each hotel could send 25-30 staff (and more for big-size hotels) to participate the event. Kindly advise the number of staff or people you may know who can participate and send the form back to us.

In addition, at present, there is only THB200,000 in our account and we really need more financial support and contribution.  The fund will be used for all activities and movement against the oil exploration and drilling especially for the event on July 31, 2010.  The people who wish to donate and contribute, please contact:

Rak Ao Thai letter:
Kill The Drill!
Koh Samui leads the protest against the oil exploration and drilling project off-shore of the Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao Region in the Gulf of Thailand.
Khun Ramamanate Jaikwang, President of the Siam Gulf Preservation Network Group, recently presided over the steering committee meeting for setting up a movement against any government grant to petroleum companies for oil exploration and drilling concessions in the territory of Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao.
The committee revealed that the direction of the movement shall be determined by representatives from official organizations, active communities, leading network groups and clubs on the islands, including: the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, the Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter, East Coast – Samui), the Tourism Association of Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao, the Green Island foundation and various other local community groups on Koh Samui and neighbouring islands.
The committee also announced that there shall be an initial mass demonstration, to be made on 31st July, 2010, of full public support against any oil exploration concessions. A minimum number of 35,000 local residents (including those from Koh Pha-Ngan, Koh Tao and Suratthani) and visitors (including foreigners who are sympathetic to the cause) will link hands forming a continuous human chain along Koh Samuis 52-kilometre long ring-road.
The purpose of this huge collective expression of solidarity is to inform the Thai government, fellow citizens of Thailand and other nations of the world that the overwhelming public opinion in the Southern Region is fully against the Department of Petroleum granting permission for oil exploration and drilling in the territory of Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao which could have a disastrously negative impact on the entire regions tourism and fishing industries, with possible knock-on effects being experienced in Suratthani, Nakorn Sri Thammarat and Chumporn, and even places as far a field as Phuket, Krabi and Phang-Nga.
The committee is calling for the governments grant to the project to be withdrawn forthwith and requests an official meeting with the Department of Petroleum in order to discuss possible energy production alternatives which wouldnt potentially threaten the regions thriving tourism industry.

WATER SEMINAR HELD ON JULY 12 The good, the bad, and the ugly….
Samui Mala inspired, funded and co-organised a water seminar with Green Island Foundation to discuss the water crises on Samui. The seminar was very very interesting – with speakers following the water cycle from where it falls in the mountain and all the way down to how it affects the ocean ecosystem and offering advice, insights and solutions to Samui’s water issues both on land and at sea. Speakers included Mr Wuttikun of the Samui watershed unit, the Provincial Water Authority, the Regional Environment Office ,and Dr Suchana from the Department of Marine Science in Chulalongkorn University, as well as visiting expert Dr Goreau of the Global Coral Alliance. The Rak Chaweng group presented an upbeat glimpse of their fabulous achievement to clean up one of Chaweng’s worst feature the ghastly khlong running from Laem Din to Chaweng Noi.

While more than 40 people attended the full day workshop, it was frankly disappointing to see that there were not more people who can and will make decisions about Samui’s infrastructure there to share the workshop or hear the experts. And disappointing to see that nobody has taken any measure to educate adults and children to store, preserve, conserve and reuse water during this crises. Samui Mala is not an organisation to complain or point fingers, but it is impossible to stand by and not say something right now. Many who attended the workshop had to go home thinking: “What kind of government (local, provincial or national) will let their people run out of water and not say a word of warning concerning the quality and the quantity of water available?”

The content was presented in Thai, but we are working with the kind help of Tongsai Bay Green officer Khun Jul and other volunteers to make a summary available in English.

This is a full-length film dealing extensively with Tibetan Medicine, one of the world’s most highly developed medical systems. The original book of medicine, the Knowledge of Healing, dates back to the 12th century. Tibetan medicine is based on a holistic principle and treats both physical and spiritual aspects. The film covers both physicians and their patients in places like Dharamsala and northern Mongolia, as well interviewing scientists in Switzerland, Vienna and Jerusalem who are studing the application of natural Tibetan medicine in the West. We also hear about the latest scientific investigations into the healing properties of Tibetan medications, first instigated by Karl Lutz, a Swiss pharmaceuticals merchant who died in 1995. It was Karl Lutz who started industrial production of Tibetan medications in the West, leading to some astonishing cases of healing. See http://www.franzreichle.ch/eng/films/knowledge.php for more details.

SAMUI MALA SEPTEMBER FESTIVAL – COME OUT AND PLAY….
This year’s Mala during the third week of September is going to different to previous years. We want to celebrate a ‘back to basics’ theme, taking into account that times are tough for everybody with low visitor counts, with little water, with a tough economy worldwide and that we can’t ask companies and businesses to support as much as in the past. But that’s no reason we can’t enjoy the natural abundance of beauty, friendship and community by sharing and caring and giving of our most precious resource – time.

Be a volunteer:
At the kids’ day:This year’s festival will include a children’s day on Saturday 25th September. One of the main reasons we established the Samui Mala was to teach and reach children. We want this to be a fun filled informative and environmentally friendly day and Samui Mala is looking for volunteers to to help with planning and to help on the day. Please send your details to samuimala@gmail.com and we’ll put you on the team!

Other days: There are other events soon to be announced, including a healing day, a blue day, a yoga event so do let us know if you want to come out and play and be part of the spirit of this event.

More and more we realise that our environment is not just something ‘out there’ like scenery that needs fixing, but that our air, our water and our food are part of us, and that we are connected to the environment and part of it, and that our lives depend on it…. come and join us!

Community Protest Against drilling in the Gulf of Siam

Please come and join us on Wednesday 7th July at 9:30 in front of the Tetsabahn’s office to protest drilling in the Bay of Siam!
This is the final call to stand up and make your voice heard. Can we make a difference? How do we know if we don’t try?

We have seen the results of the BP spill recently and know about the promises that oil companies give – even with the best of intentions, accidents can and will happen! What are the other implications of rigs near our tourist islands? Noise? Pollution? Lights? Disturbance to the already fragile marine ecosystem? Come and find out more….

Below is a link to a video which is being aired on Samui Channel this week in Thai. It is a call to arms to everyone who loves Samui and who cares about our future to protect our island from potential disaster.

http://www.4shared.com/video/6zQnfHMm/PeePae.html

Below is a summary of the contents:
On Thursday at 9:30am there will be a second and FINAL hearing regarding oil exploration in the bay of Siam only 42 km from Koh Samui, and affecting our neighbouring islands of Koh Phangan and of course Koh Tao.
By law, if there is no opposition the company can go ahead and drill.
Chevron has been coming back and forth to our bay to do oil exploration. They have followed pro forma announcements about public meetings, but the fact is that not many people know about the details.

Now is the last preparation before they actually start the drilling and the last time that the people of the island have to stand up and be counted!.

It is necessary for each person who loves Koh Samui to come to show their concern by attending the protest at 9:30 at the Tetsabahn on Wednesday, July 7th.

Everyone needs to attend! Bring your friends…

We all know what a major oil spill can cause. It is devastating to the environment, the health of each and every person, animal and every person’s livelihood. Our island environments of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and the Ang Thong Marine National Park would be devastated. And it isn’t a remote nightmare, it is happening right here.

PS The word for protest in thai is KAT KAHN both high tones.
