Civet Coffee – The most expensive in Asia
Have you heard the term this coffee tastes like shit!
Well believe me there is an animal out there that does for us for free, or in certain areas of Thailand they are now farmed.
Then take trip down the spice road of Thailand and pot into the coffee shop in Kanchanaburi, where a cup of coffee will set you back 1,500 – 500 Baht per cup, yes you are not going blind or our figures are incorrect.
The Famous Civet Coffee has stirred some excitement a while back in 2011, There a kilogram of coffee beans who have been harvested from the farmed civets compounds fetch up to 100,000baht per kilo. Yep! That’s correct 100k up.
There is also a second tale for this Coffee beans, it’s more expensive than the one from “Doi Chang, where it’s known as an organic coffee, homegrown in Chiang Mai. Their award winning and priced, certified coffee goes for 20,000 baht per kilo. What makes this coffee? So expensive, the owner has indicated it’s a long drawn out process, they also base their coffee on the worldwide market prices.
And goes for 50,000 to over 180,000 baht per kilo.
On this plantation the civets are left to eat and consume on their own time, although they are in a very large enclosure, that holds around 20 civets, each one has four of its own Arabica coffee trees, they are free to eat as much as they want making them a natural fed cat, rather than force fed as some do.
Civets or the Asia palm civets to be precise are a small nocturnal animal that feeds on the berries for their fleshy and delicious pulp, the beans then pass through the cats digestive system and come out among the feces, they are then collected, thoroughly washed, sun dried of course, toasted slightly and then brewed, the beans would then yield an aromatic coffee with a very distinctive and pleasant taste, with less bitterness.
The aid of the civets digestive juices help the seeds on their way, civet coffee is preferred with fresh milk; try it with goat’s milk for a touch of eccentricity!
by the way Koh Samui ahs its own civiet coffee house next to the Bandon Hospital, 200 meters on the left as you head towards the Aiport, try it!!
