China Leads Hotel Pipeline Pack
A Lodging Econometrics report shows China leading the global hotel pipeline for 2012, having passed the US in forthcoming rooms.
According to the report’s data, a total of 7,078 hotel projects with 1,277,339 rooms were in the worldwide construction pipeline at the end of Q3 2011, with China accounting for 1,385 properties with 396,804 rooms (31 per cent share) to top the US by 48,874 rooms.
The report states that China’s economy “weathered the global recessionary trends with minimal impact. As such, the pipeline rebounded quickly from modest declines and now exceeds the previous Q2 2008 peak, with totals up 12 per cent by projects and 22 per cent by rooms.”
India’s total pipeline stands at 375 projects with 70,668 rooms, with hotel openings beginning to accelerate and expected to reach a record high in 2012, which could draw down pipeline totals.
